Travel and Tourism

 Course overview
This qualification is designed for students who want to prepare for the world of work. The knowledge, understanding and skills you will learn in studying a BTEC Tech. Award. First will help to prepare you to enter the workplace in a Travel and Tourism setting. You will build towards a portfolio of coursework The activities you complete each lesson will build towards units of coursework which will go towards your final grade.

This Travel and Tourism qualification will also complement other GCSE courses, in particular English and Geography, putting into context much of the knowledge and skills developed in the study of those subjects, and there are strong links with GCSE Business and and the BTEC First Award in Hospitality and Catering.

Knowledge and skills developed

You will study 3 compulsory units:

Component 1: Travel & Tourism Organisations and Destinations
Component 2: Customer needs in Travel & Tourism
Component 3: Influences on Global Travel & Tourism

You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the travel and tourism sector and develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace.
These skills include: team-working, working from a prescribed brief, working to deadlines, presenting information effectively, accurately completing administrative tasks and processes.

Assessment Method

Internal assessment – externally moderated

Components 1 & 2 are assessed through non-exam internal assessment. The non-exam internal assessment for these components have been designed to show a students’ understanding of the industry. Assignments are released twice a year and needed to be completed to a December or May deadline.

Component 3 is a synoptic assessment completed in Y11. It needs to be carried out under supervised and timed conditions (2 hours) and is externally marked by Pearson.

The qualification will be based on assignments completed throughout the two years of the course under supervised and timed conditions. You will carry out tasks that your teachers will assess and mark, and so you will receive feedback as to how you are getting on. Your result will be recorded as a Level 1 Pass. Level 2 Pass, Merit or Distinction.
